Outdoor Adventure

Sault Ste. Marie is surrounded by wild beauty and endless ways to enjoy it. Hike forest trails with waterfall views, take a leisurely walk on the trails or waterfront, bike rugged paths, paddle along the shoreline, or cast a line in a quiet bay. Winter brings even more ways to explore — from snowshoeing and skating to snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. Whether you’re looking for adrenaline or a peaceful escape, the Soo’s outdoor spaces are open year-round.  Spend time outdoors and see why more and more adventure seekers are drawn here — this is where outdoors and adventure truly meet.

Discover wild rivers, majestic channels, hidden coves, and stunning waterfalls — all connected by more freshwater lakes than you can count. Paddle the St. Marys River by canoe, kayak around St. Joseph Island, glide across Lake Superior on a stand-up paddleboard, or even surf some of the finest freshwater waves.
Experience four seasons of biking for every style and skill level — from scenic road rides to some of the best mountain biking trails in Ontario. In winter, ride over 40 km of expertly groomed fat bike trails, making Sault Ste. Marie one of the largest fat biking networks in Canada.

From steep climbs along rocky cliffs to beachside walks and gentle forest loops, the Soo is made for hiking. Explore rugged routes like Robertson Cliffs and the Voyageur Trail, stroll along the waterfront boardwalk or Hub Trail, or walk through Hiawatha Highlands before the snow flies. There’s a trail for every pace and every season.
Skate through winter at one of the Soo’s many outdoor rinks — including the beautiful Clergue Park Skating Trail along the waterfront and the newest chilled pad at the Downtown Plaza for an extended season. Another great option is to grab some snowshoes and explore quiet winter wilderness, frozen waterfalls, and snow-draped forests across the region’s breathtaking terrain.
Sault Ste. Marie is home to Searchmont Resort which offers one of the highest verticals in Ontario and great alpine conditions all winter long. The Soo will also give you world-class cross-country trails and untouched powder for backcountry adventures. Whether you’re carving downhill or gliding through quiet forest trails, the Soo delivers a full range of winter experiences.
Soak up summer at local favourites like Point Des Chênes, Harmony, Batchawana Bay, and Pancake Bay — all just a short drive from the city. There are so many spots perfect for swimming, sunbathing, or just skipping stones. Not a beach day? Explore natural park spaces like Bellevue, Kinsmen, and Fort Creek — ideal for walking trails, peaceful views, and outdoor downtime. The Soo has you covered.
